Acupuncture relieve severe fibromyalgia

Patients suffering from fibromyalgia experience a significant symptom relief for several months after treatment compared with patients receiving sham akunpunktur.

The findings reported at the 11th International Pain Congress this week, taking place in Sydney, Australia. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, USA, included 50 patients with moderate to severe fibromyalgia in a study. All patients had previously tried various treatments without framgång.Patienterna were randomized to receive either acupuncture or simluerad acupuncture. The patients themselves did not know which of the two types of treatment they received. Treatment consisted of six treatment sessions and lasted two to three weeks. Before treatment, immediately after, a month later and seven months after treatment, patients responding to questions about how they experienced their symptoms and how the disease affected their daily liv.Hos the patients who received acupuncture showed a significant improvement in symptoms such as pain, pathological fatigue, and anxiety. After seven months, the improvement has subsided and the symptoms were as severe as before treatment. The greatest improvement was seen one month after behandlingen.Enligt researchers, the study shows that acupuncture can really affect fibromyalgia, even patients with relatively severe fibromyalgia.
