Peter Fire Brace studied acupuncture at the International College of Oriental Medicine (ICOM) in England (1980-83), the European School of Acupuncture in France and the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Chengdu, China. Past Principal of ICOM, he was a co-founder of Monkey Press, publishing the Chinese Medicine from the Classics series with Claude Larre and Elisabeth Rochat de la Vallee. Part 1: The Alchemy Of The Inner Landscape
Behind the meridian and organ maps of traditional Chinese medicine lie the Neijing Tu, Inner Landscape and Xiuzhen Tu, Cultivating Authenticity, body maps, Preserving the teachings of the Neidan Inner Alchemy tradition in image, text and story.
In the Neijing Tu the spinal river runs from the Sea of Marrow down to the wild waters of the Sea of Can. Can this depletion overtime be reversed, so That degeneration transforms Into regeneration? Laozi seat serene, high in the Kunlun mountains, while the star-crossed lovers of the Ox Boy and Weaving Maiden toil in the valley Below. In the Xiuzhen Tu the body is not a landscape, but an alchemist's stove, elsewhere time and timing are of the essence, and the five zang and the gallbladder work together to refine the Three Treasures of Jing, Qi and Shen to give health, longevity and illumination.
This presentation goodwill give insight Into These important Daoist pictures and explore how can we use Them to deepen our understanding and practice of Chinese medicine.
Part 2: The Nine Openings
Intrinsic to bothering the Neijing Tu Inner Landscape Map And The Xiuzhen Tu Map of Cultivating Authenticity is the Small Heavenly Circulation, Xiao Zhou Tian, popularly termed the microcosmic orbit. Many may remember the image of the lone man facing the tanks on Tiananmen Square in Beijing in 1989, but How many know that ironically Tiananmen (天 安 门) is the Gate (but 门) of Heavenly Peace (tian an 天 安)? Unobstructed free flow (tong 通) is a Crucial Concept in Chinese medicine, but just as important is the concept of keeping (shou 守), guarding, treasuring Safely and securely (Cang 藏). This needs secure gates and doors (but hu 门 户), Border Passes and watch towers (guan que 关 阙) That Can Be closed (bi 闭), as well as opened (kai 开). Imagine leaving your front door open all the time - danger of entry from Unwanted guests, robber winds and perverse influences of all kinds, who Will Be only too happy to relieve you of your valuables! Imagine Having it Permanently boarded up - danger of stagnation, the disconnection and isolation, or a hermit's delight of course! But (门) is explained as the two leaves of a door face to face and is an important radical in Distressed Many Chinese characters.
Heaven Earth - Laozi.
For the Daoists the nose is the heavenly gate (but tian 天 门), the mouth the Earthly door (di hu 地 户), entry points for the da qi and the qi gu, without Which there is no q at all! The characters for asking (wen 问) and listening (wen 闻), two key practitioner skills, are made with a mouth (口) at the door (门) and an ear (耳) at the door (门) respectively. Guarding the gates of the senses Against invasion, so the heart was not overwhelmed, was a common idea in early Daoist texts and we find echoes of this in Chinese medicine, with the importance of a peaceful, and there present joyful, heart. Today our ears and eyes are assailed by stimulation from every quarter and the Three Screens of TV, computer and mobile phone are a definite potential danger to the Three Treasures of jing, qi and shen! The off-switch may be the best remedy!
In the architecture of the body Many points are gates and doors of Various kinds, like Those little flaps on Advent calendars That You open to reveal what's inside! Ht 7's Spirit Gate (Shenmen 神 门) is opened to release or closed to safeguard the shen into hysteria and insomnia, depression and Desolation. You 4's Gate of Destiny (Mingmen 命 门), flanked by the authentic yin and yang of the kidneys, opens the door to life's Deepest resources, so helpful in deep-seated cold and exhaustion, premature aging and Impotence. Lu 2's Cloud Gate (Yun but 云 门) releases the misty vapours of the lungs to refresh and moisten, not just the lungs Them selves, but Also the shoulder joints and the sense organs above, there occurring Also making it a useful point for the elderly. Bl 12's Wind Gate (Fengmen 风 门) closes the door on Those robber winds. Kid's 13 Baomen (胞 门) and Zihu (子 户) (alternative names) free the Gate To The Uterus and open the Door to the Child. These examples are just a small selection from a long and interesting list! So open the door When The qi comes knocking, the last thing you want is stagnation and blocking. Do not delay now, do not you wait, turn That needle and open the gate!

A Swedish translation
- Army 门 - door, gate, door
- Tian An Men 天 安 门 - sky + peace + port. Tian'anmen Guǎngchǎng is the full name of "Tiananmen Square". Guǎngchǎng mean square.
- tong 通 - open (+ many meanings), ex. in the word tōngchàng 通畅 - unhindered, smooth, free passage, open. for example, clearing out slightly or open by shooting, stick, strike or poke.
- shǒu 守 - guard, protect / shǒu fǎ 守法 uphold or obey the law
- Cang 藏 - store, conceal, hide, gather
- hu 户 - door (half Army 门)
- tian Army 天 门 - sky + port di hu 地 户 - soil + door. For daoisterna the nose is the heavenly gate and the mouth of the earthly door openings for da qi and qi gu,
- guan 关 - (port + phonetic) close, shut, shut down
- bi 闭 - close, stop (eg flow), (bìqì = hold your breath)
- kai 开 - open
- wen 问 - question - mouth 口 + port 门
- wen 闻 - hear - ear 耳 + port 门
- HT 7 - Shénmén 神 门 - Spirits + port
- You 4 - Mingmen 命 门 - destiny + port
- LU 2 - Yùnmén 云 门 - clouds + port
- UB 12 - Fēngmén 风 门 - wind + port
LING灵
The beautiful and striking character processing 灵 contains at its base the important
character wu 巫 Representing a woman who speed the power to connect with the
invisible world, making the spirits descend through her dance. Wu 巫 shows two
figures dancing around a pole set between heaven and earth 工 and is the shaman,
the magician, the seer, the doctor, the healer, the ancient word for a practitioner of
Medicine. Above Wu 巫 are three mouths 口 Representing the invocations, the
Singing, chanting and praying. At the top is the character yu 雨 rain, showing not drops of
rain descending from the clouds. Ling 灵 ice hadeeth the magical, Miraculous,
supernatural power to bring rain. It is the Effective Power of the shen 神, lively,
Awakened, subtle, intelligent, ingenious, spiritual, the soul as opposed to the body.
We find it in the title of the second half of the Neijing, the Lingshu 灵 枢, Spiritual
Pivot, Which sometime Consider to Be a reference to the acupuncture needle Itself. It is
found on the heart meridian in Ht 2 Qingling 青 灵, Vital Spirit and in Ht 4 Lingdao 灵 道 Spiritual Way (Japanese Shinto), on the kidney meridian over the heart area at
Kid 24 Lingxu 灵 墟 Spiritual Mound, and on the mai you behind the heart at Lingtai
灵 台, Spiritual Tower, Itself a Daoist name for the heart. Reiki, the Japanese healing
system, ice Lingqi 灵 气 into Chinese. The deep links to the heart are plain to see.
We have, as practitioners, to ask the ancient wu 巫 in modern times, to go between the
seen and unseen worlds and connect the two: the Biao 表 world of externals,
tangible, audible, visible, Measurable symptoms and the bone 本 world above, below,
Behind and beyond, Unspoken, unexpressed, inaudible and invisible, yet Affecting
every breath, every heartbeat. Can we read the invisible and call down the rain in the
wasteland? As the old song goes: It Do not Mean A Thing If It Is not Got That Ling 灵!
