Swedish Institute for acupuncturists planned
Representatives of acupuncture education in Sweden has submitted an application to the Government, concerning access to higher education for acupuncturists.
The aim is to establish the requested acupuncture as a natural part of the care-Sweden, with licensed practitioners under the same conditions as other integrative health care approaches. There are a lot of international research on acupuncture and an important aim of the planned higher education is that Swedish acupuncturists should be able to conduct research.
- It's just a matter of time before we start and follow the European trend and standard, says one of the founders, Jan Lindborg, who is currently responsible for operations on Acupuncture Academy in Stockholm.
In many other countries today are trained acupuncturists at the college level, including in Norway, Germany, UK and USA. In Sweden today there are seven three-year courses in acupuncture, which is approved by the Swedish Acupuncture Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Although the planned higher education is at least three years and is intended as a nationwide education. Higher education should include both acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine, conventional medicine, and research-related academic subjects. The new college will collaborate with other universities outside Sweden. Discussions are being held today with both Norwegian and Chinese universities.
Acupuncture is based on traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture is classified today as science and proven experience of the National Council on Technology Assessment, SBU. Today, there is no legal impediment to the government and the National Agency will approve Akupunktörhögskolan. There are few treatments as the researched and debated so much in recent years.
Sweden currently has approximately 500 professional acupuncturists with a three-year education and professional group performs about 300 000 treatments per year. Swedish Acupuncture Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine welcomes plans for new college education.
- There is a great need for the profession of nursing Sweden. However, educational environment for acupuncturists have been meager in Sweden in an international comparison, and many countries now lies before us in that area. In Sweden, for example, further training in acupuncture in just a few weeks which may not occur in other countries, says Mats Peace Country, chairman of the Swedish Acupuncture Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
