Gua Sha  anti inflammation and immune protection – teori & workshop

Topic: The Science of Gua sha: anti inflammation and immune protection
Gua sha is a healing technique of traditional East Asian medicine known as a treatment for pain, thermal dysregulation and for features of stasis in acute or chronic conditions. Sometimes called ‘coining, spooning or scraping’, Gua sha is defined as instrument-assisted unidirectional press-stroking of a lubricated area of the body surface to intentionally create transitory therapeutic petechiae called ‘sha’ representing extravasation of blood in the subcutis.

Modern research shows Gua sha produces an anti-inflammatory and immune protective effect that persists for days following a single treatment. This accounts for Gua sha’s impact on pain, stiffness, fever, chill, cough, wheeze, nausea and vomiting as well as its ability to reduce liver inflammation and lower liver enzymes in active hepatitis.

Ayra Nielsen

Dr. Arya Nielsen

Dr. Nielsen will present the research on the science of Gua sha focusing on heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), the target molecule that medicine is desperately working to pharm for the treatment of all internal organ disease. Recently a team at Harvard demonstrated that Gua sha upregulates HO-1.
Dr Nielsen’s presentation points every practitioner of Chinese medicine to an underutilized therapy that is in their medical bag encouraging practitioners to own their medicine as science illuminates and builds on what the ancients somehow ‘knew’.
